How many yankee fans are there
This week, Harris Interactive came out with its annual baseball poll. Among many interesting findings thoughts on instant replay, the racial and gender breakdown of MLB fans, etc. Some team from New York is number one. What it doesn't do, much to my disappointment, is give us hard numbers on how popular each team is. Even with a sample size of 2, adults, it's impossible to get a large enough data set to be meaningful when there are 30 possible answers.
Still, it would be nice to know—how far ahead are the Yankees, at number one, from the Red Sox at number two?
Are there actual real live Miami Marlins fans out there? These are the burning questions. These ponderings become relevant every year around this time when America votes on whom to send to the All-Star Game. MLB's county-by-county results maps confirm that geography is destiny; the candidates with the ties to the nation's most populous areas always seem to win.
Is it really any wonder that this year's Final Vote winners both hail from Chicagoland , or that last year's had the Deep South and an entire country to themselves? This got me wondering—what are most powerful voting blocs in baseball? Which teams own the most turf, or hold sway over the most people?
We know this generally, of course, thanks to measures like the Harris poll. But to my knowledge, no one has ever undertaken the ambitious project to quantify how many millions of fans each team has. What team has the largest fan base— and how large is it?
In , their first season as the only team in New York, attendance actually dropped as they drew only 1,, In , New York's most beloved team started its history. The Mets played their first two seasons in the Polo Grounds. In , they finished in sixth place, and in , they were 10th in a 10 team league. It was a terrible embarrassment. The low point, which illustrates the point that the majority of Yankees fans are front runners occurred on Sept. The last place Yankees played a rescheduled game against the Chicago White Sox. Hall of Fame broadcaster Red Barber told the television audience, "I don't know what the paid attendance is today, but whatever it is, it is the smallest crowd in the history of Yankee Stadium, and this crowd is the story, not the game.
Barber asked the cameras to pan the empty stands. Louis Cardinals in seven games. They'll hope a change of environment is exactly what they need to win their first title ever, but they need to add more talent to their roster first.
Tigers is really a historic team. They are also the oldest continuous one name and one-city franchise in the American League. From to , the Bengals won 4 World Series Title. Since , Detroit Tigers played their home games at Comerica Park. The Tigers are one of the worst teams in the league right now but they had their fair share of success during Miguel Cabrera's prime. Still, their 2. Founded in as the New York Gothams, the Giants is the franchise with most win games in the history of American baseball.
They have won 23 NL pennants and have played in 20 World Series competitions. The rivalry between them and the Los Angeles Dodgers is one of the longest-standing and biggest rivalries in American major leagues.
However, perhaps it won't be as crowded as ever now that the Giants have finally started a long-overdue rebuilding process. We'll see. Fans : 3. The Chicago Cubs are a legendary franchise. In , they won the World Series ending a year championship drought. The North Siders play their home games at Wrigley Field since Wrigley is by far one of the most mythical ballparks in the history of the game. Franchise set the world record for the largest attendance for a single baseball game : was an exhibition against the Boston Red Sox in at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum with , people attending.
They play their home games at Dodger Stadium in and have been on the losing side of most World Series lately until finally getting over the hump in And now that they've added Mookie Betts and David Price to an already impressive roster, they have everything to become a dynasty for many more years.
Fans : 5. Boston Red Sox is not a just another team. They won 9 World Series Titles becoming the third-most of any MLB team and their popularity around the world is almost bigger than any other baseball franchise.
The rivalry between them and the Yankees is one of the greatest in all major sports. Fenway Park is their historic ballpark since and one of the most intimidating stadiums every rival could set its feet on. In other words, non-Yankee and non-Met fans may pick the Mets when forced to choose between the two of them, simply because they dislike the Yankees more. This year, though, the Mets beat the Yankees on the open-ended version of the question — the version in which they have always done worse.
The Mets need to keep winning, however, if they want to maintain an edge over the Yankees. Now, it seems the Yankees may also gain or lose fans depending on their record.
Before this year, Quinnipiac had never polled after a season in which the Mets made the playoffs — or World Series — more recently than the Yankees. That is, in an environment where the Mets were doing slightly better than the Yankees, the pattern would have been for the Yankees to still have a larger fan base.
