If you could edit your past, what would you change? I would have been a better listener. I would have pursued more friendships instead of focusing so much on work and myself. What keeps you awake at night? Not being at peace with myself, in spite of an ongoing lifetime effort to try to calm down and accept that, no matter what, I did the best I could.

What is the most important lesson life has taught you? Where would you most like to be right now? On a walk with my father, asking him all the questions I never got to ask — and just listening. I wanted to be a movie star, and my agent, Sam Cohn, God rest his soul, pressured Mike Nichols to hire me. Mike, from the very beginning, wanted Jack Nicholson.

I heard a rumor—tell me if it is true. I did! It was only written as two lines that he sings, from the soliloquy, and I sang the entire soliloquy. One of the great thrills for me, even though the movie was not successful, was when Jack Nicholson sang the entire soliloquy. They put in what I did at the table read. That was the only thing they kept from me. Mike and I over the years became very close.

So much so, the days before he died, he came over to my house and I sang a whole concert for him of special music I put together. It was the relationship I had with his daughter that made me say to my wife, please, please, can we have a child? With Mike, that became one of the great relationships of my life because of the difficulty. And what I say to people, which is nothing new, is you walk toward your fear, not away from it.

You lean forward, you lean in, you breathe for those people. And the way to conquer it is you stay with that discomfort. Where in your training, early on, do you feel like you started to learn empathy? It came through my wife. I was trying to do research, talking to red-diaper babies, et cetera, understanding what was going on at that time. My wife turns to the bookshelf in our house. How emotional she became.

It was a phenomenal gift. I never imagined that I would be back on television. Read it. Which was not acceptable in the world of TV, but they let me do that. From the very first shot, I wanted to take care of this human being. I wanted to nurture her. I saw her as my figurative child, as my legacy, as what I could offer the world.

Do you have trouble leaving your work behind? I take it with me. On Sunday night, actors from the film came together via Webcam for a live-streamed reading of the script, as a fund-raiser for the Democratic Party of Wisconsin. By Helen Rosner. Over the course of a long and winding hour, we covered her disdain for Donald Trump, her experience directing movies at a time when few women were, and why it has taken her four years to finish her memoirs.

By Rachel Syme. This interview has been edited and condensed. Maybe because you were becoming a man. I saw it. Without breaking it. At all. Patinkin, meanwhile, never stops chewing. He too manages to spread an entire cracker without damaging it but he has to lay it down first, unlike his wife whom — and I really must repeat this because it is phenomenal — does it while holding the cracker in the air.

Watching them each shake salt over their buttered matzo makes it literally impossible not to go out and buy at least two boxes yourself. Manischewitz, whose logo is prominently displayed, should write them a check. How to avoid becoming a coronavirus divorce statistic. The shutdown situation can be uniquely hard on married couples. Still, at no point during these decades of infatuation did I ever think I would spend seven minutes happily watching him and his wife eat matzo. I cannot get enough of these videos.

First of all, how did I not know Kathryn Grody was so fabulous? I blame myself because, in disappearing down the wormhole of a Google search, her intelligence and wit are obvious, and Patinkin is not shy about sharing his adoration. But never before have I seen a couple so truly, madly, deeply married.
